Hello Reader,

At the beginning of my posts, I mentioned that I would need to complete a final project for my senior capstone. Currently I am not sure what I am going to do. I am currently working with three ideas…

  1. Racism in the Modern Drag Scene. I have discussed this topic and have provided some research on this.
  2. The Ball Scene. I touched on this topic in my historical post. I have found myself highly interested by this period. I have also found myself fascinated by the issues of the time.
  3. People of Color in the Beauty Industry. I have also touched on this issue previously. Makeup and beauty have a very interesting relationship with the black community. Many brands have gotten in trouble for not making enough products for people of color.

I will figure this out…

This week, I have been asked to discuss the idea of Afrofuturism. When researching, there seems to be two definitions. The first definition is science fiction with an interweaving if black culture. This definition primarily relates to television, film, and media. The second definition is in the idea of mixing blackness and ideas of the future. This definition is in connection to literature, art, clothing, and other ideas.

Many others discussing this topic will relate this topic to Black Panther from Marvel Comics. This is because he is one of the purest forms. The fictional kingdom of Wakanda has always been an African village with boundless technology. Personally, I find myself more interested with the fashion associated with Afrofuturism. Personally, the most important Afrofuturistic fashion icon is Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element.

There is a lot to process from this image. Let’s start by breaking down the historical background. Originally, Prince was cast for the role but there was scheduling conflicts. Prince was an eccentric and colorful character that one could argue was Afrofuturistic in style. Putting Prince in space would only eventuate this theme.

This costume on Chris Tucker expresses Afrofuturism very strongly. Firstly, his hair is a stylized Afro. The hair cannot be described as natural as it is blonde. The outfit is an animal print (I believe cheetah). Afrocentric fashions have largely focused on animal patterns for sources of inspiration. The necklace that is being worn is very reminiscent of native jewelry from Africa but in a couture style.

There are countless other representations of Afrofuturism throughout our culture. I highly recommend that you delve into this topic yourself and see if it is for you!

Stay safe out there Reader.

Sincerely,

Matthew Wuerthele
